Bill Gates loves to share his reading recommendations. He does it often. I love it when people recommend books because it makes it easy for me to try new ones. Someone’s vetted it and found it worthwhile. And when that someone is uber successful Bill Gates, even better.
When Bill Gates shared his 5 Great Books For The Summer, I had to check it out. Here’s his list:
#1 The Power, by Naomi Alderman
What if women could discharge massive electric shocks from their bodies? Gates says “This novel made me think about gender equality in new ways…it flips the roles of men & women.”
#2 Why We’re Polarized, by Ezra Klein
Gates says “This book helped me understand modern politics better” and that many of us may need to reframe how we think about changing someone’s mind, by appealing to someone’s identity rather than to their logic.
#3 The Lincoln Highway, by Amore Towles
Set in 1954, it’s about two brothers driving from Nebraska to CA to find their mother when their trip is thrown way off-course. Gates says this novel “seems to be saying our personal journeys are never as linear or predictable as an interstate highway.”
#4 The Ministry for the Future, by Kim Stanley Robinson
Gates calls this “A scary but hopeful novel about climate change”. It opens with a historic heat wave when the electric grid gives out. It explains science & shows “how high temperatures can literally kill people.”
#5 How the World Really Works, by Vaclav Smil
Gates calls it “a compelling & highly readable book that leaves readers with the fundamental grounding needed to help solve the world’s toughest challenges.” Things like Climate Change, Energy, Food, etc.
